Monmouth Cap

Started and finished a Monmouth Cap from a free pattern by Colleen Humphreys (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/monmouth-cap-the-details-matter). Started on 11/8/2018. Finished (but not yet blocked) 11/11/2018.

“The earliest surviving example of the use of the term ‘Monmouth Cap’ is in a letter dated 1576. ” – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monmouth_cap

I’m mostly ambivalent about this cap. I made it because I had the bulky yarn in my stash (gift for my birthday) but even with being able to say “look, it’s totally period!” and point at caps from the late 1500s… it’s discouraging to knit what pretty much amounts to a plain vanilla stocking cap.

I started this project off on a pair of 10.5 29” bamboo circular needles and found it awkward to work so I transitioned this over to some 10.5” bamboo double pointed needles.

My first projects were on bamboo needles and I used to swear by them but at this point they feel kind of sticky to me. I finished up the project on them but I may need to flesh out my collection of larger metal needles and stick to those going forward.

Still.. very fast knit.. 3 days of sporadic knitting on very large needles (10.5 US) with very large yarn (bulky Patons black wool) with very large gauge (3 st/in). The hat itself is very stretchy and will fit me without fulling.

I’m starting to get the feeling I must knit tight because everything I make ends up just a bit too small for fulling and then fitting me. That said.. 10.5 US is the largest needle size I own.. I will have to whittle my own needles out of 2x2s to get a bigger gauge.
