In the SCA I'm known as Magnifica Sylvie la chardonnière. This is my blog to dither on about my SCA research projects (or whatever blows my hair back)(and a lot of stuff blows my hair back). <<more>>

What's on your worktable?I'm working on an Autumn gold bodice for my Antwerpen gown. I had a blue kirtle. It got too big for me so I split it open and plan to turn it into a split-front Antwerpen gown. Under that gown I'll need a kirtle for support. I have the new bodice almost finished. I just need to add eyelets to it and attach it to the gown and I should be good to go. I'm hoping to have this done and wearable before West Coast Culinary Sympo#WorktableWednesday#worktableWednesday ... See MoreSee Less

When I joined the SCA I thought I would want to be a bard and re-tell fairy tales. I collected a couple of books about fairy tales/folk tales.. and story telling. Then I realized that most of the fairy tales that I know show up in the 17th/18th century and are post-period. I also realized that performing in front of groups is NOT my happy place. Grow and learn I guess. Anyway. Interesting if stilted article about the much earlier origins of some familiar tales. ... See MoreSee Less

What is on your work table? This past weekend at West Kingdom 12th Night my apprentice, Toka, joined the Order of the Laurel. I'm super proud of her. The invitation was well deserved. As part of the ceremony she gave her apprentice belt back to me. I teared up.At the moment I have a couple of other apprentices in the West and across the Known World but none in Atlantia. Even though I've been in Atlantia for 5 years I believe I'm still somewhat of an unknown quantity. Now that I'm less broken/more active, part of my goals for this year is spend time/energy getting to know more people in Atlantia and maybe find folks who are interested in being "my people".Upcoming:1/17: Nottinghill Coill Baronial Birthday2/7: Virtual Winter University2/20-2/22: Ymir2/28-3/1: West Coast Culinary Symposium#WorktableWednesday ... How to stealth at a big Kingdom event where you are known to 75% of the attendees:1. Move out of kingdom for 5 years. Only drop in twice in those 5 years (last visit was 2 years ago)2. Wear garb in a style you usually don't wear with your hair totally covered and wear makeup (!)3. Walk without a cane (last time I was seen in kingdom I was hobbling and barely walking. This is MUCH better) It was nice to attend an event where I knew SO MANY people. One of my goals for this year is to meet/become familiar with A LOT more Atlantians. I had folks do double-takes until I assured them that they really did know me and, yes, I am Sylvie. It made me snicker.I also stole a sheepie (evil grin) from either The Guard or The King of the West (it was very exciting, the rum was good and the details are fuzzy). But that is a story for another post.I'm pleased with my Slavic impression. I did find the headgear a bit futzy and I forgot a pennanular for the neckline but overall I feel it was consistent with the information I had for an early Ukranianian impression. ...
