What are your favorite (and least favorite) SCA myths?Myth: You have to do it all yourself and all by hand in order to play successfully in the SCA.Fact: No. First of all, there is no winning. It’s not a competition. It’s a hobby, a social outlet and (for some) a lifestyle choice.Second of all, you get to decide the level at which you play and you get to decide if you’ve met your expected level. This means you get to decide what you wear. You get to decide the components of your encampment. You get to decide the contents of your feast basket. You get to decide HOW MUCH you play and in which activities you participate. If you’re happy with what you have and what you’re doing then you’re done. Go forth and enjoy your hobby.If you’re not happy then there are a lot of other options. These include: thrifting, bartering, trading, buying outright, making it yourself. Open on Fridays 4pm-8pm, Saturdays/Sundays 12-4pm until the 24th December. Free entry, no booking required.We will open bookings for virtual tours of the exhibition after the 26th December. This reconstruction of a c.1547 man’s linen shirt is included. Friday is for thinky-thoughts.Last night, while speaking to a friend, he said: "So I'm standing there in my $600 boots and an outfit I paid $500 for, talking to a newbie and telling them the SCA isn't that hard to do and I feel like a hypocrite."I run into similar situations. I make my own clothes.. and spend LOTS of time on it (because it's my jam and what I enjoy). So then later when talking to newbies I feel like a hypocrite saying "it's not hard to do".
