Tonight I finished knitting my second knitting project, Frankenhat.

I started knitting because I wanted to create one of these red hats from this detail from “Peasant Wedding” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

I asked about this over on the Elizabethan Costuming FB page and was told that these were based on the Scholar’s Hat pattern on Ravelry. After my spectacular failure fulling that first hat I spent a while parsing it and decided that the Scholar’s Cap was not the right pattern. The hat that I wanted to create from the picture had ear flaps. Coincidentally, while looking for something completely different I noticed the “Knitted coif cap to fit a child aged six years” from p. 143 of “Tudor Child“. That coif cap pattern creates a smooth topped coif lacking the cutie-pie nipple on top. It also includes the exaggerated ear flaps (which can be tied on top of the head).

It turns out that both patterns are by the same person (Sally Pointer) and reading over the coif cap pattern it was easy to see what would need to be changed to add the ridges and the cutie-pie nipple from the Ravelry pattern to end up with something more more similar to the one on the right in the picture.

I scribbled down the recipe on 4/24 and finished knitting on 5/10. Because this is a combination between a pattern from a book and a pattern which is up for sale on Ravelry I do not plan to publish the knitting pattern.

The final hat is big. This is a good thing. I plan to (gently) full the hat tomorrow to shrink it to the right size.
